Discover where this fascinating concept came from and how it’s used today.

Origins of Dazzle Camouflage

Did you know British warships used unique camouflage patterns during World War I to confuse enemy submarines?

In 1918, while serving in the Royal Navy, British marine artist Norman Wilkinson proposed disguising warships for protection against destructive torpedoes.

Concealing massive military sea vessels would have been nearly impossible. So, instead, Wilkinson wanted the ships painted with clashing geometric patterns to confuse enemy observers and distort their perception of a target’s size, speed, and direction.

Wilkinson called the approach “dazzle camouflage,” also called razzle dazzle. This technique was designed to throw off the enemy’s aim.

Around 4,000 British warships were painted in dazzle camouflage throughout WWI, earning Wilkinson widespread recognition and creating what must have been the world’s most visually disorienting naval fleet.

Application of Dazzle Camouflage Today

Fast forward to the 1950s when dazzle camouflage found a surprising new role in the automotive world.

It started when German automotive journalists published unauthorized photos of prototype vehicles in a leading car magazine.

The unexpected leak created a buzz, giving the public a rare glimpse of upcoming car models.

Since then, manufacturers have gone to great lengths to transform and disguise their test vehicles, aiming to mislead journalists and competitors.

They adopted dazzle camouflage to hide the exteriors of prototypes and protect design secrets.

Dazzle camouflage properties:Bold patters, Disruptive design, stark asymmetry.

This amazing car wrap design features:

  • Bold, contrasting patterns with sharp, geometric shapes and high-contrast colors, usually black and white
  • Stark asymmetry with unbalanced and non-repetitive graphics
  • An intentionally disruptive design not meant to blend in but to confuse observers and interfere with sensors like lidar and cameras

Interestingly, some manufacturers today have decided to embrace the limelight, realizing that nothing generates buzz quite like a car wrap design that looks like it drove through a Jackson Pollock painting.

So, while dazzle adhesive camo still masks exterior details, some now include Easter eggs, like a QR code directing observers to a homepage, to stir interest and generate engagement.

Key Takeaway: From warships to test vehicles, dazzle camouflage remains a smart technique for visual deception. Today, it’s an effective way to protect design secrets in the competitive automotive industry. It also serves as a marketing opportunity for automakers who want to generate interest.
